It is no doubt that cancer is one of the leading killer disease currently in the country. To make the matters worse, treatment for the disease is arguably one of the most expensive as well.
Perhaps this is the reason that has led Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago to seek for help from legislators in handling the disease.
According to Mandago, there is a need for the parliament to pass a law that will make it mandatory for hospitals to get free cancer drugs as well as exempting taxes to all cancer treatment equipment.
This, the governor says will allow private hospitals to procure the equipment at a cheaper price which will subsequently help cut down on the cost of cancer treatment.
"When the hospitals procure the equipment at a cheaper price, treatment will be affordable as cancer is the most dangerous disease now and its treatment is very expensive," noted Mandago.
Speaking during the burial of Sammy Kiplagat Rono, brother to former Nandi Governor Dr Cleophas Lagat in Kurgung-Nandi County, Mandago further reiterated county governments commitment in making sure there is an availability of drugs in the hospitals.
The county boss further asked legislators to shoot down a bill that seeks to make it mandatory for counties to procure drugs from the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KeMSA).
"Don't allow that bill to go through. We want it to be like the way it was. What if there are no drugs in KEMSA? When there is a shortage in KEMSA, we can procure somewhere else," Mandago said.
