The family of slain Rongo University student Sharon Otieno has dismissed social media report that estimates burial expenses at Sh2.5 million as 'fake and unprecedented'.
A list at social media forum indicated that organisers are intending to hire professional mourners at Sh300,000, catering services at Sh200,000 and Sh120,000 for coffin.
But Elijah Opiyo, the committee chairman says the list is fake and is intended at discouraging well wishers ahead of Sunday's fund drive in Magare village where the committee targets Sh1.1 million.
“There are people who intend to jeopardize efforts of our family in making burial arrangements for our daughter. We are condemning them,” said Opiyo
He added: “I have invited a senior Homa Bay County Government official to the fundraiser but he seemingly turned down my invitation. He challenged me on why he should give us money for hiring professional mourners. Many guests have also raised a similar complaint."
Despite the ongoing court battle in which Migori Governor Okoth Obado has been implicated in the murder, the family agreed to bury her on October 18th at her grandfather's home.
Mr. Obado along with his aides Michael Oyamo and Caspal Obiero, who have since been charged with murder, will know their bail application fate on October 24th, exactly six days after Sharon's burial.
