It was a moment of shock and sadness on Monday for the fraternity of St Joseph Nyabigena secondary school in Gucha in Kisii county after a student collapsed and died after allegedly being beaten by a prefect.
County police commander Martin Kibet has confirmed the incident and said that the police have started investigations over the matter.
"We are aware of the incident and we will allow detectives to carry out investigations before we conclude on what caused the death,” Mr Kibet confirmed as quoted by the Standard.
It was reported that the form three student was reading the Bible early in the morning before the form four prefect arrived at his class slapped and kicked him on his stomach where the deceased fainted immediately.
"The deceased was reading a Bible some few minutes to 7 am. The prefect came in and after an altercation, with the deceased, he slapped and kicked him on the stomach after which he immediately collapsed," the Standard reported.
Efforts to rush him to Tabaka Mission Hospital proved futile as he was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital. Neither the hospital nor the school administration has released any report on the unfortunate incident as the parents continue to call for explanation.
