If you are like me, the concept of bargaining as a buying technique leaves you numb. The reason is that you’ll meet an acquaintance who will ask you how much you bought the stuff. And then he will burst into a long laugh (if he is a close friend) then tells you that the stuff goes for half price at a secret location he only knows.
For that matter, I always avoid bargaining as much as possible unless the item I am trying to purchase is available by no other means other than bargaining. I prefer supermarkets or instances where the seller shouts the price at thousand decibels as if everyone is half deaf.
I have learned a few bargaining techniques that would be useful to you too. Here they are:
Half the asking price
Usually, the sellers jerk the prices up, hoping that you are too stupid to pay it. Or it would be greed. The trick is to half the asking price and watch him lower it slowly by slowly, sticking to it as if your life depends on it. If you reach a stalemate, go to option two.
Pretend to walk away
It works two ways, either you walk away for good or the seller calls you back. If he does, the price you quoted is the correct one. If he doesn’t, know that the real price is way below the item truly costs. Sometimes you are insulted, which means you’ve learned something, and next time, you will up your price a little.
Know the price
When the two techniques fail, make it a point of knowing the price of items you are interested in. ask a friend who knows how to get things. But not just any friend but a friend who would through an inferno with you wearing a big smile on their faces. If you don’t have such a friend, the following option perfectly suits you.
Use supermarkets, and online shops
The biggest turn off nowadays is when people advertise without including the crucial information – the price. It does not matter that the product can extend life or print money if you don’t include how much it costs. As such, supermarkets and online stores are popular for bargaining impaired people like me. Here, you know that the seller has made all calculations and the price is just right.
