African Environment Ministers will from Monday hold the seventh special session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN).

The four-day session is scheduled to take place at the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Gigiri, Nairobi.

Apart from the 54 African Environment Ministers, environment experts, representatives of African civil society groups, partners and media are expected to attend.

According to Journalist Rosalia Omunga the chairperson of the Kenya Environment and Science Journalists (KENSJA), Monday and Tuesday would a meeting of experts while the Ministerial meeting takes place on Wednesday.

“On Monday and Tuesday, experts meet to deliberate on technical issues. On Wednesday the ministerial meeting takes place while on Thursday, NEPAD and AMCEN press conference takes place at 10 AM,” said Rosalia in a memo to KENSJA members.

In preparation for the meeting, journalists drawn from various media houses held a meeting at Gigiri on Sunday afternoon. The meeting with the media was meant to shape issues to be discussed at the conference.

The Tuesday afternoon session will discuss the role of the Africa media in raising awareness on environmental issues. The discussants will be Rosalia Omungo, Johnson Mwakazi, Barack Muluka and Mohamed Atani from the UN Environment, Africa Office.

The AMCEN session is being held under the theme, “Innovative solutions for environmental challenges and sustainable consumption and production”.
