Former Lagdera Member of Parliament (MP) Farah Maalim has condemned the arrest and detention of Nairobi-based lawyer Zamzam Abib.
Maalim on Monday took to Twitter where he criticised the government for allegedly denying the lawyer bail.
"Arresting a young mother on Good Friday, denying her bail because of a matter that is purely civil is the height of impunity. Even under the terrible days of KANU, extortion cartels didn't run the criminal justice system. Zamzam as an advocate is an officer of the court. Dignity!!!" said the former National Assembly deputy speaker.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has also condemned the lawyer's arrest and detention terming it a blatant abuse of public office by the police and the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Abib was arrested on Friday, last week over allegations that her firm Abib and Associates recalled an RTGs payment of Sh6 million she had issued to Salim Ali Sheik.
The alleged payments sparked off a commercial dispute after Sheik allegedly sued Zamzam in efforts to compel her company to pay the money.
The city lawyer is said to be detained at the Kilimani Police Station in Nairobi and is likely to be arraigned in court on Tuesday.
Her arrest and detention have sparked off protests from the legal fraternity as lawyers demand her immediate release.
Zamzam's lawyer Nelson Havi says they will sue the DPP and Inspector General of Police (IG) for allegedly abusing the powers of their offices.
