A local politician based in Kisii County has claimed that Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is still ongoing in the Kisii region.
While speaking in Kisii town, Lillian Marwa, who unsuccessfully vied for the Kisii County women representative seat during the 2017 polls, said the practice is still taking place secretly in Kisii.
"FGM is still ongoing because parents especially mothers think the exercise is good for their daughters. They are doing this silently in the villages where the is minimal surveillance by the government officials," she noted.
She appealed to local chiefs to ensure cases of FGM are not occurring at their respective places of administration.
"Chiefs should be more alert especially this time where April holiday is approaching. Girls should not undergo the outlawed cut. They should be left fresh for the sake of curbing disease transmission and related complications," Marwa added.
The vocal politician said chiefs should not spare those engaging in the vice and urged all the leaders from Kisii County to be at the forefront fighting the vice.
"Leaders especially those elected should ensure residents are educated on the dangers of FGM on our girls," she added.
FGM has been one of the illegal cultural practises in Kisii regions.
