Samburu Governor Moses Kasaine is now a free man after two days of isolation at Industrial Remand Prison in Nairobi where he was taken to over alleged corruption.
On Tuesday, detectives from EACC arrested the second term governor for alleged misappropriation of Sh85 million, in which he's said to have benefited directly and 13 other officers.
Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti released him on Sh100 million bail, an amount which he appealed at the High Court and subsequently reduced by Justice Mumbi Ngugi.
“It has not been demonstrated that Governor Lenolkulal is a flight risk, and I note that the Prosecution did not oppose his application for bail,” read part of the ruling by justice Mumbi.
DPP Noordin Haji insisted that he had enough evidence to open a file against Kasaine and his team, adding that he had benefited from business deal with a petrol station linked to him.
"The investigations established that the Governor Moses Kasaine Lenolkulal was trading with the County Government through Oryx Service Station for the supply of fuel since the 27th March 2013 to date," Mr Haji said in a statement.
On Thursday, Kasaine walked out of Industrial Remand Prison and is now free to wage a spirited fight against the ODPP in a bid to clear his name. He become the third governor to be arrested over corruption after Okoth Obado and Sospeter Ojaamong.
So high was the first bail term of Sh100 million, that even seasoned lawyers like Ahmednassir Abdullahi and Donald Korir termed the figure as outrageous and unacceptable.
