Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji has urged politicians across the political divide to stop confrontations in the debate to amend or not to amend the 2010 constitution.
Haji said that there is no point of politicians hurling insults at each other.
The veteran senator says that the debate needs sober minds and engagement.
Speaking at Mogadashe Grounds in Garissa on Saturday, Haji said that politicians have a right to support or not to support a constitutional amendment.
"We must stop ugly confrontations that could threaten the pace of the country even as we debate on whether to have a referendum or not," he said on Saturday.
Haji said that the country needs peace to advance its development agenda.
He said that some arguments on a referendum by some politicians are a threat to peace.
The Garissa senator did not, however, make his stand on the referendum debate.
Haji co-chairs the Building Bridges Commitee Task Force with Siaya Senator James Orengo.
The commiteee came into place after the famous March 9 handshake.
Th debate on referendum rages on with opposition leader Raila Odinga saying it is unstoppable.
On Saturday, Deputy President William Ruto supported the referendum push.
He, however, said that he is opposed to how some politicians are pushing for the referendum.
Garissa Township MP Aden Duale has claimed that referendum calls are a plot to derail the Jubilee government's Big Four development agenda.
