It was joy and Jubilation at Kenyatta National Hospital after a nine-month-old baby boy from Mandera was discharged on Monday after undergoing a successful head surgery.
The mother of Mustaab Dakane, was overjoyed to witness recovery and discharge of his son following a successful head surgery that removed an enlarged tumour.
Baby Dakane was airlifted from Mandera to Nairobi in March by Emergency Plus Medical Services (E-Plus) in partnership with Amref Flying Doctors for a congenital extra-cranial tumour surgery.
Ms Julie Gichuru of Arimus Media reached out to E-Plus after Abdi Hussein Mohammed, a nurse at Mandera County Referral Hospital made the appeal and E-Plus airlifted the baby to Nairobi.
E-Plus facilitated baby Dakane’s treatment and air ambulance by AMREF flying Doctors which amounted to Sh2.67 million.
Baby Dakane went through neuro-surgical procedures by a team of doctors that was led by Dr Samuel Njiru, who managed to remove a noncancerous tumour to restore the health of the baby.
Drs Muthoni Ntonjira, Medical Director E-Plus and Susane Nabulindo, Anesthetist KNH were also part of the surgical team.
Dr Nabulindo, speaking during the discharge said the baby was stable and only requires regular dressing that can be done at Mandera County Hospital.
“We will, however, maintain close monitoring of the baby to full recovery. There was no major complication apart from excessive blood loss but we had enough blood to give him,” said Dr Nabulindo.
The baby’s mother, Nimaa Abdi, thanked the doctors saying she had lost hope since she could not afford to pay for her son’s treatment.
“I thought my child will never be normal again when I noticed the growth in his head, I was hopeless and did not have funds for his treatment. I am very grateful to Kenyatta National Hospital for saving my son’s life” she said.
