Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria has come out to give his opinion on the ongoing debate on providing private security personnel with guns.
Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSRA) Director General Fazul Mohamed last Friday announced that private guards will be allowed to carry firearms from July after undergoing mandatory training.
“We are going to be issuing firearms to security guards and also ensure their welfare is catered for including minimum wage bill in line with the Employment Act of 2007,” Mohamed said in a press conference in Nairobi.
However, Kuria has termed the issue of providing guards with guns as sensitive saying it should be left to 'serious' security organs but not an authority such as PSRA.
"The issue of arming private security guards is very sensitive. It has merits and demerits and its a very serious issue with far-reaching implications," Kuria said.
"As such I wonder why an issue of this magnitude is not within the jurisdiction of the National Security Advisory Council or even the National Security Council. It is my considered view that my friend Fazul Mohamed is not the right person to make such a pronouncement," the second-time legislator added.
In his argument, Fazul said the move to arm guards was motivated by the need to fight terrorism and insecurity in the country, adding that a proper regulatory framework has been put in place.
