Deputy President William Ruto has vowed to continue with his preparations ahead of the 2022 polls, contrary to President Uhuru Kenyatta's wishes.
Speaking during an interview on Kameme FM on Thursday, Ruto who has been traversing the country despite caution by his boss, said 'even Christians are preparing for the coming of Jesus' yet they don't know when He will come.
"We do not know when Jesus will return, but as Christians, we are preparing. Why should we not prepare for the 2nd Tuesday of August 2022 election date whose timing we know," he said.
This comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta cautioned politicians against early campaigns.
According to Uhuru, the campaigns will disrupt service delivery, a move that could sabotage his quest for a good legacy.
“My main aim is to uplift the lives of our people. We cannot achieve this if we engage in politics and are divided politically. The over 40 million Kenyans want services from those they elected. Let us wait for the five years to lapse to start politics,” he said in a past event.
ODM leader Raila Odinga has also been warning politicians against early campaigns. In a past event, he said his intention is to work with Uhuru to improve the lives of Kenyans.
“There cannot be two presidents at a time. We can only have one in each election cycle. That is why I resolved to hold on and support President Uhuru Kenyatta,” he asserted as quoted by the Standard.
During the Tuesday's interview, Ruto also dismissed claims that he's opposing the referendum. According to him, constitutional changes should focus on improving the lives of people.
"The constitution is for all Kenyans, we cannot have a referendum about political positions. I am not opposed to the Constitution review, but it must be about citizen issues," he noted.
