Harambee Starlets's participation in this year's AWCON remains in jeopardy, with reports indicating that FKF does not have enough funds for the team's preparations.
This year’s tournament, which begins on November 17th will be staged in Accra, Ghana, and will be the second time the Starlets will take part in the competition.
The team has been pooled in Group B together with holders Nigeria, South Africa, and Zambia.
However, the Football Kenya Federation might be forced to turn to Kenyans for financial help to support the team's trip to Ghana.
Football Kenya Federation FKF President Nick Mwendwa has insisted that Starlets must take part in the bi-annual games, but might be forced to rely on a few ‘philanthropic’ Kenyans, should the Federation fail to raise over Sh 40 million budget within the next two weeks.
FKF presented a Sh48 million budget to the Ministry of Sports on Monday, but the government now insists that there are no funds.
This now leaves the women's team pegging their hopes of traveling to Ghana on the Sports Fund, that is understood to have over Sh10 billion lying at the KRA accounts.
"We need to have the Sports Fund up because, in our understanding, the Ministry of Sports doesn't have enough funds to facilitate all the activities that we have in place. I am calling upon the people concerned, in Parliament, to get the Sports Fund operational...the only recourse we have if this doesn’t happen in the next two weeks is to go to Kenyans and call upon them to support the team. We must go to Awcon," said Nick Mendwa.
