With the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) set to declare the Migori County senatorial seat vacant following the death of Senator Ben Oluoch Okello, political heavyweights are readying themselves for a ferocious political battle.
Once again, the region's popular party, ODM, and its leader, Raila Odinga, will be at the center of the brewing contest.
A key Raila support base, the battle for the Orange party ticket will no doubt be a do-or-die affair where the winner will surely have an upper hand to succeed the slain Senator.
Though no aspirant has so far come out publicly to declare their intention to run for the seat, key Raila allies and foes may try their luck.
But for the party, its biggest headache is conducting credible nominations to prevent fallouts that have been its hallmark in the region during the past exercises.
In 2017, the party's support in the county was threatened after two factions emerged following what was claimed to be shambolic' nominations as Governor Okoth Obado and former Cabinet Minister Ochillo Ayacko locked horns.
Already, key Raila allies including Ayacko, and politician David Osiany are emerging as front runners for the seat. To further complicate the political arithmetic is the Dalmas Otieno factor.
Otieno is slowly gravitating to Raila after their past differences. Further, both Osiany, Otieno and Ayacko hail from Rongo; the epicenter of the county's politics.
There is no doubt that any nomination exercise which is deemed unfair will rock ODM boat in the region. Will Raila get it right? Only time will tell.
