Nairobi governor Mike Sonko is a man loved and loathed by supporters and foes in equal measure.

Slightly over a year after being elected, Governor Sonko is yet to give an indication that he is a better Governor in terms of leadership and service delivery compared to his predecessor Evans Kidero.

The question is, is there a chance that Nairobians may be regretting having elected Sonko as their second governor?

In my opinion, yes.

The reason is simple; the unnecessary reshuffles, sackings and suspensions of members of his cabinet.

In February this year, the Governor replaced his then Finance Executive Veska Kangongo with Danvas Makori, who was serving in the Agriculture, Livestock Development and Fisheries docket.

Kangongo was moved to the Devolution docket.

Larry Wambua who was in Devolution was moved to the Environment, and replaces Emmah Mukuhi who was transferred to the ICT docket.

Veteran Journalist Charles Kerich, who was heading the ICT docket, was moved to Lands while Peter Njuguna who was heading the lands docket was moved to the Agriculture department.

In July this year, Sonko effected yet another mini-reshuffle of his cabinet besides suspending three officers in the name of former Chief of staff Brian Mugo, then acting chief finance officer Ekaya Alumasi, and then acting head of county treasury Stephen Mutua.

He accused the three officers of misusing public funds.

And just this week, Sonko suspended four top county officials after accusing them of insubordination.

The officers had contradicted Sonko’s stand on the possible causes of over ten babies dying at the Pumwami maternity hospital.

The suspended officers are County Secretary Peter Kariuki, Health CEC Vesca Kangogo, Chief Officer Health Services Mahat Jimale and County Attorney Lydia Kwamboka.

The question is, how do you effectively deliver on your promises if you are the leading governor in terms of sackings, suspensions and reshuffles?

Sonko is not worth being Nairobi’s governor.
