Levinah Otieno, the boy's mother, had lighted the candle during a blackout before she left shortly to make purchases at the nearby shop, leaving her child in the sitting room.

On her return, she noticed smoke on the rear of her bedroom.

According to Levinah, the safety of her child was the only thing ringing in her mind as she dashed towards the blazing room.

Luckily, the child was standing some distance away from the mosquito net that had just started burning.

“I think he was trying to access the candle from the stool. The room had just started burning when I arrived. I rescued the baby though I was confused on what to do with the fire. Before I could figure out, the mattress had caught fire as well,” Levinah said.

She later alerted firefighters who arrived quickly, and put out the fire before it spread to other sections of the house.

"They responded faster. My cupboard, TV screen and mattress burnt," she added.

The child suffered from shock and is currently receiving treatment at the Avenue Hospital in Kisumu.
