In recent years, the government has put in place proper security measures especially on the border with neighboring Somalia where extremist militants Al-Shabaab operate.

The extremist group has taken responsibility for the attacks.

In 2010, the government deployed Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) into Somalia in an operation dubbed ‘Linda Nchi’.

The deployment of KDF in neighbouring Somalia put pressure on Al-Shabaab.

As the government and Kenyans battle to tame terror agents and their activities, here are some of the worst terrorist activities that happened in the country but left Kenyans stronger.

1. August 7, 1998 bombing

Over 200 people died in an attack at the United States Embassy in Nairobi.

The attack was linked to members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad related to the late Osama Bin Laden.

2. September 21, 2013 Westgate attack

Gunmen from the extremist Islamic Group Al-Shabaab attacked Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi.

The four-day siege left 67 people dead and others injured.

It was one of the worst terrorist acts in the country and drew condemnation from across the world.

5. January 15, 2019 Riverside attack

Six armed terrorists stormed DusitiD2 hotel at 14 Riverside drive killing 21 people.

Security forces swiftly responded to the attack and eliminated the suspected terrorists as hundreds of people were rescued.
