Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino has warned local institutions of higher learning against a proposal to increase tuition fees.
The former University of Nairobi student leader told public university Vice Chancellors to expect 'fire and brimstone' should they raise fees on comrades.
"I take note of the proposal by Vice Chancellors of Universities to increase fees in the coming financial year and I would like to caution them to expect fire and brimstone from me if they dare make such a move," he posted on Facebook on Tuesday night.
In a recent meeting bringing together all VCs of public varsities, it was agreed there was need to raise fees to cover for increasing expenses and dwindling revenues being experienced by most institutions.
Babu said by increasing fees most students would drop out as others fail to pursue higher education, consequently failing to excel in their dream careers.
"Education is a human right not a luxury. These university CEOs need to realise that education is not a preserve of the rich. If it were not for education, I would not be where I am today and I will not accept for my fellow youths to be locked out of opportunities," the first-time legislator said.
