Many a time we have found ourselves on the receiving end of naughty matatu conductors well known in street slang as 'makanga' for one reason or another.
Most of the common cause of disagreements between some 'makangas' and passengers arise from the issue of giving back change or alighting passengers at the wrong stage.
For instance, along Thika Road, a certain matatu Sacco that operates between Thika and Nairobi is notorious for this.
Let us focus on the issue of change where the makanga deliberately delays giving back your change or simply refuses with it.
1. Ensure there is no peace in the vehicle till you get what is rightfully yours. You should never let your hard earned cash just go like that. Make noise till the makanga bows down to pressure. Other passengers will come to your rescue.
2. Confront the makanga boldly. Many makangas are loudmouths but if you confront them boldly and demand your change, they will quickly cooperate with you.
3. Do not alight the vehicle. Even if you have reached your destination, just stay in the matatu and make it clear to the makanga that he/she will pay for your return journey. Do not show him your 'teeth' as you tell him this. Wear the 'Hitler' look.
4. Report the makanga/matatu for misconduct to either the owner or the police. While they may not be quick to act, the culprit might just get frightened and comply.
