Gor Mahia made history on Sunday when they qualified for the CAF Confederations Cup quarter-finals, after beating Angolan side Petro Atletico 1-0 at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani.
K’Ogalo, as the team is popularly known by its fans, beat Atletico in a thrilling match, which was attended by thousands of the team's fans.
Rwandese Jacques Tuyisenge sent K’Ogalo fans into a rapturous celebration on the 57th minute, calmly slotting a penalty after Francis Mustapha he was brought down in the box.
The Kenyan defending champions had to sweat for the victory after they were reduced to nine men. Midfielder Wendo was the first to be shown the marching orders in the first half after a clumsy challenge.
Left-back Shafiq Batambuze was given same marching orders in the second half after a second yellow card, leaving K'ogalo to play out the final minutes of the match with nine men.
The sweet victory will see the club receive a cool Sh27 million for qualifying to the group stages and additional Sh8 million for the quarters.
K’Ogalo is the first Kenyan team to qualify for the games and it was a sweet victory which saw its fans storm the pitch at the sound of the final whistle.
The game was, however, not devoid of more drama as both coaches had been sent to the stands during the game as their outbursts rented the air.
