Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion now wants the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to employ locals in North Eastern schools as teachers.
Sossion says that employing locals will stop terror attacks that have been targeting non-local teachers in the region (Mandera, Garissa and Wajir).
Responding to last week's killing of two non-local teachers by suspected Al-Shabaab militants at Arabia Secondary School in Mandera, Sossion said that non-local teachers in Northern Kenya are under security threat.
He said that the teachers in the region are not comfortable and are living in fear of being attacked.
"The only option to stop these attacks is for TSC to employ locals as teachers in North Eastern region,” he said Monday.
Sossion attacked TSC accusing it of neglecting the plight of teachers working in North Eastern region.
The nominated MP claimed that TSC has allegedly failed to address the security issues facing teachers in Northern Kenya.
Last week, suspected Al-Shabaab militants stormed Arabia Secondary School and killed two non-local teachers.
The militants also set several classrooms a blaze.
Interior CS Fred Matiang’i says that security has been heightened ahead of start of national examinations next month.
