Despite gaining independence from Khartoum in 2011, South Sudan, Africa's youngest nation has been rocked with chaos after Kiir's break up with former Vice President Riek Machar.

In April, Kiir asked Machar to return home for the formation of a government of national unity but the rebel leader is yet to comply. He has given a host of demands ahead of his anticipated return.

"Even now, it's not too late," Kiir told reporters

"I am inviting Dr Riek Machar to urgently return to Juba so that we can work together to expedite the process of forming the revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity," he added.

Before independence, Moi played a key role in the peace processes in Sudan during the Darfur crisis. He hosted former SPLM leader John Garang several times in Nairobi.

At Kabarak, Moi and Kiir discussed the peace processes in the war-torn country but not immediate details were released. Baringo Senator Gideon Moi was present during the meeting.

"Today, the President of South Sudan, H.E Salva Kiir, paid a visit to retired President, H.E Mzee Moi and briefed him on the ongoing peace initiative. President Kiir was glad to see Mzee Moi in good shape and health and deeply expressed his belief in achieving sustainable peace in South Sudan," wrote Mr Moi.

In April, Moi also hosted his former counterpart Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, who had visited the country. Throughout his 24 years in leadership, Moi played a key role in promoting peace.
