Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu and former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti are among the 50 Kenyan women leaders who have been honored by the United Nations (UN).
The UN has honored the women for their courage and trans-formative development agenda.
In a book titled ‘#50journeys,' the women have been praised for championing peace and development.
They have also been honored for advocating equality and an end to social-cultural practices like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
The book published by UN Women Africa seeks to inspire and encourage women at grassroots levels to venture into leadership positions.
The UN Women Africa advocates for respect to women rights, empowerment of women through education and end to retrogressive cultural practices.
Other women featured in the book include Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris, Ijara MP Sophia Abdi Noor and Kisumu Woman Representative Rosa Buyu.
Former Gichugu MP Martha Karua, Millie Odhiambo, Cecile Mbarire and Rachel Shebesh among other women also featured in the book.
Ngilu became the first woman to contest for the Presidency in 1997.
She has served in various Cabinet positions and championed development in various areas.
Ndeti on her part, has been advocating for electoral justice and respect to human rights.
The former legislator who unsuccessfully contested the Machakos gubernatorial seat in both 2013 and 2017 General Elections, has been severally quoted stating that she will not get tired of fighting for electoral justice.
Ndeti is likely to contest the Machakos gubernatorial seat in 2022 polls.
