At the function to honour Kenyan women in State House, Raila recalled how former KANU head of disciplinary committee Okiki Amayo gave party mandarins nightmares.

In his speech, Raila hailed former politician and gender activist Phoebe Asiyo as 'iron lady' who saved thousands of men from Amayo's authoritarianism following her victory in polls.

“He (Amayo) was also the chairman of disciplinary committee. Remember men used to cry when they were called to appear before the committee,” he said as Uhuru burst into laughter.

Even after beating Amayo in 1979, Asiyo's victory was nullified and she would again win in 1980 mini poll after Raila's aid in Homa Bay.

“Phoebe is my elder sister, we are family friends right from the time we were young,” he said.

Mr. Amayo, Kariuki Chotara and powerful PS Hezekiah Oyugi caused nightmares to KANU politicians over their persistent summons.

According to Raila, he even used to beat party members who held divergent opinions.

Uhuru honoured Asiyo, Ida Odinga, Margaret Kenyatta, Nyiva Mwendwa among other women in State House.

It was Raila's first meeting with Uhuru in State House after the historic handshake in March this year.
