Women in Keumbu, Nyaribari Chache constituency in Kisii County have been blamed over the high number of criminal cases being reported in the area.
It is alleged that women hide criminals in their houses instead of reporting them to police.
According to Keumbu Nyumba Kumi officials led by Francis Moenga, women have been defending their sons who are criminals.
"Women are the reason there are high crime cases in Keumbu because when their sons commit a crime, the women hide them in their houses instead of surrendering them to authorities for disciplinary actions to be taken against them," said Moenga on Thursday during a public baraza in Keumbu.
Mr. Moenga maintained that criminals will not be condoned any more in the area.
He threatened that any woman caught shielding criminals will be arrested to be prosecuted on behalf of the suspects.
"We will arrest and surrender any woman to police found shielding a criminal. Residents are encouraged to be at the front line fighting crime in the area," he added.
The official urged youths who have graduated to stop being idle in the village but instead venture into other constructive activities.
"Youths should find small businesses to do and not joining criminal gangs to terrorize residents," he stated.
Area police boss Joshua Muthoka assured that police officers are working closely with chiefs and Nyumba Kumi officials to weed out criminals.
