Newly appointed sports minister Amina Mohammed failed to show up or send a top ministry official to represent her in Nyamira on Thursday during the burial of John Mayaka, a veteran athlete.
Mr Mayaka, a bronze medalist in 1972 Munich Olympic games, became the first Kenyan to win a medal in off track events after participating in javelin Competition where he emerged third.
And on Thursday, Mayaka was laid to rest in a function that only saw officials from local AK branch officials led by Peter Angwenyi of South Nyanza attend, raising questions with regard to helping of legends during the time of need.
Until his death, Mayaka served as Athletics Kenya, Nyamira branch member. He had retired from the Kenya Defense Forces where he had served for several years.
His burial just came a day before the burial of another Olympic legend Nyantika Maiyoro who will be laid to rest in the neighbouring Kisii after dying aged 88.
It is also not clear whether or not Ms Mohammed, who was appointed to the ministry recently, would attend the funeral on Friday (today) as part of government delegation.
Coincidentally, Nyamira County government officials also snubbed the funeral, further raising fundamental questions about the plight of the legends at the time of need.
