Lawyer Boniface Nyamu has been ordered to pay Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Sh5,000 following his inability to expedite a case he had filed against the flamboyant politician.
High Court Judge James Makau ordered the lawyer to pay Sonko the money after he asked for another adjournment on Wednesday.
Mr Nyamu had moved to court seeking to have Sonko declared unfit to lead. He had based his petition on Sonko's delay to pick a deputy governor, recording his colleagues and disrespecting MCAs.
“Nyamu is not being serious by seeking for an adjournment again in a case that was brought to court under a certificate of urgency,” Judge Makau ruled as quoted by the Standard.
Last week, Sonko was embroiled in an online spat with Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris after leaking a conversation allegedly between them.
The move saw several women demand that Sonko apologises to the politician. However, in a rejoinder, a defiant Sonko refused to apologise.
“Anataka kunipiganisha na wamama na mimi nawapenda sana wamama. Mama mmoja asifanye diversionary tactics za kunikosanisha na wamama. Mimi niko na bibi na watoto wasichana (She wants to create enmity between me and women yet I love women. One woman shouldn't use diversionary tactics to create a dispute between me and women. I have a wife and female children)," said Sonko.
Ever since Polycarp Igathe resigned as his deputy, Sonko has not picked a deputy. He chose Miguna Miguna but the name was rejected by the Nairobi County Assembly.
