The National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) will soon be starting demolishing houses illegally built within Eldoret town.
NEMA Uasin Gishu County director Boniface Birichi says they have already issued notices to 27 structures built on riparian land asking owners to demolish them.
Birichi said once the notice expires, they will begin bringing down the structures whose owners would not have complied.
Majority of the targeted houses are along River Sosiani and other wetland areas.
“Already, we have issued them with reminders. There are those that have been built next to the bridge and those established on the upper Elgon View are on our focus,” said Birichi as quoted by the Standard.
The NEMA official noted that their aim is to reclaim the urban area and ensure safety for the locals.
"The life of people is much important than these buildings. Therefore, their construction should be taken with a lot of care to avoid calamities lake what happens with most apartments which are not well built. They collapse killing innocent people," Birichi noted.
NEMA has been demolishing structures built on riparian land and road reserves in the country's capital, Nairobi and recently announced plans to extend the demolition exercise to several other major towns across the country.
