Garissa members of county assembly (MCAs) have been challenged to professionally play their oversight role to ensure transparency and accountability in the county.
While addressing a section of female MCAs in Garissa, nominated Senator Falhadha Iman stated that the MCAs were the public watchdogs to keep the devolved government on the check.
“I want to issue a challenge all our MCAs both the elected and nominated. As people's watchdogs, you should strive to perform your oversight roles as enshrined in the constitution. You ought to understand that you are the major gatekeepers of wananchi,” Falhadha appealed.
She further urged the elected leaders to initiate development projects to help improve the livelihoods of their people who have remained marginalized for decades now.
“ As we all understand, our region has lagged behind in development following decades of political and economic marginalization. We can not afford to misuse any available resources meant to improve the living standards of our Garissa people,” the senator added.
The senator's remarks come at a time that the county leadership has sharply come under criticism following the ongoing water and food scarcity as a result of the ongoing drought situation.
