Crooked dealers having links with the local businessmen in cooperation with security apparatus has enabled the lucrative trade of illicit brew to resurface again.

This is despite the National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) and Kenya Revenue Authority's (KRA) efforts put in the crackdown of counterfeit goods from neighbouring countries.

“Drinks are known everywhere here in town, even the police concern is among the beneficiaries in concealing the suppliers,” said Daniel, an Eldoret businessman.

The gin sellers position themselves in Central District Market (CBD) along the groceries and in the dingy places including garbage dump site and worn-out-burnt tires, they conduct their unlawful activities, indistinguishable from street urchins but they are only known to their clienteles frequenting the place.

Agents masquerades around the market with soiled outfits, dressed on oversized jackets with protuberant bellies choked with the sachets of outlawed brew, supplying and looking for the customers. 

Consumers are cognizant to dishonest business comprising of shoe shiners, handcart pullers, matatu touts, mechanics among others are the top users of the killer drinks, they have learnt specific street parlance to veil the product while making orders and any reference to it. The common name used is Kahawa.

The addict to the illicit liquor who spoke to hivisasa.com and requested for anonymity said that some street urchins are employed to vigilantly rove around for security reasons, they watch on those spy on prohibited items meddled in the marketplace.
