Mudavadi, who has in the past opposed the move to have a referendum, however, says that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commision should be first be restructured to conduct the plebiscite.

Speaking in Lunga Lunga, Kwale County on Sunday, the former Vice President further warned that the referendum push risks being hijacked by politicians.

"Even judges found the IEBC to have bungled the August 8 elections and hence wanting. Then how can we trust it with the enormous task of conducting a credible referendum?” he posed as quoted by the Standard.

"The Constitution is not the reserve or property of politicians. It is for all Kenyans who should be well informed about the clauses to be subjected to the referendum before they participate...There is a danger of a few politicians hijacking the referendum for their own personal interest,” he added.

Mudavadi's u-turn on the referendum comes just days after Deputy President William Ruto who had been opposing the push yielded to pressure saying that he has no problem with the plebiscite.
