The late Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo was a man of principles.
Kilonzo's magnificent Valhalla home at Maanzoni in Athi River, Machakos County was largely out of bounds for the rest of his family.
It is said not even his wife or children could access this home. The late Kilonzo could spend his time at the home where he used to relax.
“It was his hideaway. Not even his wife and children went there. It was his retreat where he spent weekends and rested away from the rest of the world,” said the friend on condition of anonymity.
Besides the home, the late politician also owned a cabinet at his Ngong Road office. No one could access the cabinet including his family. It remains unclear what he kept inside the cabinet.
“Yeye peke yake ndiye alikuwa na ufunguo wa hiyo kabati. Tunafikiria ilikuwa na siri zake, [He was the only one who had the keys to that cabinet. We suspect it contained his secrets],” said the friend who has known the family for decades.
The senator died mysteriously in 2013.
His death shook the nation, it remains unclear what really killed him.
Speculations have been rife on the cause of his death.
The family has been blaming the government over the slow probe into the death.
