The 17-year-old girl is said to have gone missing on Saturday afternoon, only to be found dead in a maize plantation on Tuesday, with her hands chopped off and with deep cut wounds.

Confirming the incident, Butula Deputy County Commissioner Winston Muruge said that investigations have been launched into the incident, in a bid to solve the puzzle.

He added that a manhunt has been launched for a neighbour suspected to be involved in the incident.

"The girl had injuries when police went to collect and take to the mortuary, we have launched investigation and police are searching for the suspect,” the police boss told the Standard. (Sic).

The girl's uncle Stephen Otieno said that the girl who also had acid burns left for the stream on Saturday, but did not return, with search missions failing to bear any fruits.

He added that some materials thought to be witchcraft paraphernalia were found near the body, and now wants the police to move with speed and solve the puzzle, stating that an initial such incident went unpunished.

"The first incident happened but we did not see anybody being prosecuted despite police promising us that they would investigate and arraign suspects,” said Otieno.

Angry villagers burnt a house belonging to the mother of the suspect.

The body of the deceased was moved to the Alupe Sub County Hospital mortuary by police officers.
