The incident happened on Wednesday at Kemera area along Kisii-Nyamira road.

Witnesses said a speeding personal car collided head-on with a canter.

"The driver of the personal car was overtaking a lorry when he hit an oncoming canter head on. The two occupants who were in the personal car died on spot," stated David Machuki, an eyewitness.

Machuki said members of the public crowded the scene to rescue the victims in vain.

Catherine Mugo, Nyamira County police commander confirmed the incident and said drivers should adhere to set traffic rules and regulations to curb road accidents during the Christmas celebrations.

"It is very unfortunate we lost the two occupants who were in the personal car travelling from Kisii to Nyamira. The driver of the canter escaped unhurt," Mugo noted.

She said bodies of the deceased were moved to Nyamira County hospital morgue.

The police commander confirmed that police officers manning roadblocks will continue with a crackdown on Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) which are not adhering to the newly introduced road rules famously known as 'Michuki rules'.
