A Jubilee governor is proposing scrapping of Nairobi county.
According to Tharatha Nithi’s Muthomi Njuki, the city-county should be dissolved and the national government take over.
The county boss states that in the event we have an opinion poll, Kenyans should be given an option of deciding the fate of Nairobi County.
He argues that Nairobi is a vital county and should not be entrusted in the hands of a governor but rather the president.
“We cannot have a county like Nairobi as it is a metropolitan. It does not qualify to be a county,” said Mr Njuki.
He maintains that once the current term ends, Nairobi should not be handed over to another governor, terming it dangerous.
“[Mike] Sonko always says he is from Machakos [County]. He can seek votes there in 2022 after Governor Alfred Mutua leaves the stage or he can also come to Tharaka Nithi and seek votes here,” said Mr Njuki.
If his proposal goes through, the debate might be included in the proposed referendum that seeks to change the constitution.
