Until his sacking on Friday, March 1, former Sports and National Heritage Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa was said to be a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto.
Consequently, some would wonder why he had to go yet the DP commands a similar amount of power in the appointment and firing of Cabinet Secretaries.
If they indeed were close with the DP, its worth noting that Uhuru remains the sole appointing authority constitutionally.
Even if they had an agreement to have an equal say, there is nothing compelling the President to keep a CS just because the DP wants him around, making the DP a helpless man.
It might have had everything to do with incompetence, which is the major possible reason, and which cannot be defended without one appearing opposed to Uhuru's leadership.
If this was the case, then Ruto had no option but to watch his friend go down because of an attempt to stop it would be derailing Uhuru's development agenda.
Uhuru is also on his second and last term and is out to leave a legacy, a legacy Ruto will also need in order to boost his winning chances in his 2022 presidential bid.
Therefore it was better for the DP to sacrifice Echesa to secure his own slot and maybe bring him back later after he (Ruto) manages to secure the seat.
This could also be the start of a series of sackings in the cabinet, especially at a time when Uhuru has publicly warned that he will not show any mercy to incompetent SCs.
He has sounded a similar warning to his officials implicated in graft.
