Kalonzo said Mutua needed to be questioned on the disappearance of Kiala's daughter.

He made the remarks after it was rumored that the 16-year-old girl's alleged kidnappers were demanding political ransom from Kiala who was contesting to replace Mutua as the Machakos Governor on August 8, 2018 polls.

According to Kalonzo, Mutua was the first suspect in the incident hence called for the governor's questioning by the government's detectives.

These remarks by the former Vice President were received with lots of criticism by Mutua's supporters who claimed the ex-deputy governor was not a threat to the governor for him to go to such extreme.

Mutua was so much angered that he issued the Wiper leader with an ultimatum of two weeks to either apologize or be sued by him.

However, Kalonzo didn't budge.

Mutua was forced to put his threat into action.

Kalonzo's utterances nonetheless widened the rift between Mutua and himself.

Political differences between the two leaders started almost immediately after the governor took his seat in 2013 on a Wiper party ticket.

Mutua claimed that the Wiper party didn't support his ideologies and didn't have the same visions as his.

After two years, he ditched Wiper and formed his own, Maendeleo Chap Chap which he used to defend his seat in the last general elections.
