The 26th International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) Conference will officially begin today (Wednesday, September 12) at the PrideInn Paradise Hotel in Mombasa.

Under the theme "Sustainable maritime, port and logistics industries in emerging economies: towards a path of Blue Growth", the global conference is happening for the first time in Africa with Kenya Ports Authority fully sponsoring it.

As part of the pre-conference for the workshop, delegates held a Port Performance Research Network meeting on Tuesday, with United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary General Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi leading discussions on challenges and opportunities for maritime transport in Africa during.

Dr Kituyi said UNCTAD is engaging stakeholders to strengthen evidence based advice on the maritime, economy, transport and particularly on trade facilitation which is a very important contribution for the African continent in pursuit of a very ambitious agenda.

"We are engaging you to strengthen evidence based advice on the maritime, economy, transport and particularly on trade facilitation which is a very important contribution for this continent in pursuit of a very ambitious agenda," said Dr. Kituyi to the delegates. 

The Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development James Macharia is set to officially open the IAME Conference.
