Kisii County Governor James Ongwae has confirmed that his government is committed to ensuring a soapstone factory is set up in the region.
Ongwae stated that a feasibility study is ongoing ahead of major investment in the industry which will be a culmination of the public sensitization conference in February next year.
"Preparations to partner with the national government and other stakeholders are ongoing to actualize the value addition on Tabaka soapstone in Bonchari Sub County granite and other minerals that we are blessed with as a county," he noted.
He appealed to the Mining Cabinet Secretary John Munyes and mining PS John Omenge to intervene and help the county to set up the soapstone factory.
"Residents more specifically South Mugirango locals will benefit once the soapstone factory is set up. Brokers will not have room to continue exploiting poor locals," he stated.
According to Ongwae, Kisii soapstone is among the major minerals the National government is keen on promoting.
The ODM allied Governor urged opponents to join hands for the sake of boosting development in the county adding that divisive politics won't help them to clinch elective posts.
