According to Bails and Bonds Implementation Committee Chairperson Justice Jessie Lesiit, some suspects have been securing their freedom using fake sureties.

Consequently, the courts have been left with fake documents presented as sureties, she said in Murang'a county on Tuesday.

“The courts have been left with fake title deeds, log books among other documents, as the suspects could not be traced,” she is quoted by the Standard.

Lesiit was in the county for a tour of law courts and police stations to monitor implementation of the bails and bonds policy guidelines.

She noted that the judiciary is working on introducing an automated system to help in verifying such documents and nab suspects involving themselves in the fraud.

According to Lesiit, the policy implementation has gone a long way in decongesting remand prisons by 48-50 per cent since the start of its implementation three years.

"Population in prisons is at 50,152, following effective sensitisation of stakeholders and adherence to the policy guidelines,” she is further quoted.

She revealed that Nairobi county leads in the issuance of fake title deeds.
