Baya said there is the need to preserve the diversity of the rich cultural heritage of the Mijikenda, focusing on positive values that boost peace and harmony.

"Besides the harmonious living among the Mijikenda community I want to thank His Excellency Governor Amason Jeffah Kingi for his tremendous efforts towards blending the coastal communities, for which we believe is auspicious in our quest as a community," said the ODM lawmaker on Sunday.

Baya was speaking when he joined several Mijikenda (both politicians, elders and local) leaders during the 'Chenda Chenda' festival at Karisa Maitha grounds in Kilifi.

On his part, Kingi said Coast region's rich cultural heritage as the Mijikenda Community is a source of pride and an identity of who they are.

"Celebrating our culture is a focal point for unity in diversity. Embracing our heritage will help to showcase our unique traditions, create a platform for us to pass these traditions to the young generation as well as to embrace various counterparts thereby solidifying relationships among our communities," he said during his address to participants.

The governor who has been rallying behind the Mijikenda unity, said Chenda Chenda cultural festival is an initiative that aims to bring the Mijikendas together and rally around a common goal, steering their way towards development in the region.

"Our Unity as the Mijikenda Community and the Coast fraternity is key to our prosperity and there’s need for us to share ideas and join hands for the benefit of this region."

According to Kingi, the Coast region stands a better chance of addressing its challenges when leaders stay united and walk together towards a common good.

Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa also attended the Chenda Chenda Cultural Festival at the Karisa Maitha grounds in Kilifi Town.
