Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago has hit out at the Ministries of Agriculture and Finance for frustrating farmers.
The governor now wants President Uhuru Kenyatta to crack a whip to the two ministries which he has warned that might be a stumbling block in realizing the government's Big Four Agenda on food security.
Speaking after delivering his speech to signify the start of the second session of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly on Tuesday, Mandago accused the two ministries of failing farmers.
“Recently the CS of Agriculture was summoned to parliament to appear before the agriculture committee and we were surprised as residents of this county and my farmers are shocked to learn that the ministry intends to use the Sh4.5 billion that was budgeted for subsidized fertilizer to pay the debts in National Cereals and Produce Board(NCPB),” said the County boss.
“As a governor, I want to state categorically that this is not acceptable and I want to tell the president he must crack the whip otherwise the ministry of Finance and Agriculture are going to derail the agenda of assuring food security,” he added.
The vocal governor wondered why the Ministry of Agriculture had not paid the debts dated back to over 3 years ago and decided to use funds allocated for the importation of subsidized fertilizer in this financial year.
