Former Subukia Member of Parliament Koigi wa Wamwere has questioned the motive of a number of lawyers defending Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu.
The Supreme Court Deputy President is facing allegations of tax evasion, forgery and wrongly receiving 12 million shillings from the troubled Imperial Bank.
She has since assembled a large team of lawyers led by Siaya Senator James Orengo, with former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka also appearing for her after she was arrested on Tuesday.
Speaking on Sauti Ya Mwananchi Radio Saturday evening, Koigi questioned the duo's role in the case.
He noted that the two and the remaining team of close to 40 counsels could be out to stop the ongoing operation for personal reasons and interest.
"Orengo na Kalonzo huenda wakawa pia mafisadi ambao wanajaribu kujifunikia kabla ya kufikiwa (they could be part of the corrupt team and are out to stop the operation before it get to them)," Koigi said.
Kalonzo who is also the opposition's Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) party leader was making a return into the courtrooms after 30 years of dormancy.
The defence team also includes, among others, Homabay Town lawmaker Peter Kaluma, his Mbita counterpart Millie Odhiambo and Makueni legislator Dan Maanzo.
