The clock is ticking to 2022, the battle for the country's top seat is seemingly gaining an unstoppable momentum with the political bigwigs readying themselves for a ferocious contest.
Whereas ODM leader Raila Odinga has given the clearest indication yet that he will try his luck again in the 2022 presidential race, his journey to State House may not be rosy with Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho emerging as his new political headache.
Speaking in Bondo, Siaya County on Saturday, Raila who was recently appointed African Union Special Envoy for Infrastructure Development insisted that he is not just about to exit the political scene any time soon saying the continental job does not affect his political role.
“I accepted the AU job so as to unite Africa issues. But the base of my operations in the AU is in Nairobi. Sometimes I will travel to Addis Ababa, Lagos, South Africa, Egypt, but my main base will be in Nairobi so I am going nowhere,” said Odinga.
On the same day, while addressing opinion leaders in Mombasa, Joho insisted that he will be in the 2022 presidential race and that he will not support anyone.
“When I first announced my bid, people thought I was joking but now the tide is clear," he told the meeting of more than 1,000 leaders.
"This time if I fail, I will fail at the presidential ballot. The train has left the station and there's no looking back," he added.
For Raila, Joho's announcement may complicate his political maneuvers should he make another stab for the presidency.
