Culture defines us. It defines who we are, what we like, how we dress, what we eat, our values and practices.
Therefore every community strives to uphold its cultural practices apart from the backward ones like female genital mutilation (FGM) which are slowly being eroded.
The Luhya community is well known for its favourite meal, "ingokho and obusuma" that is chicken and ugali respectively.
With this meal, the community has long then ensured that their ladies know how to prepare it.
It was and still is the responsibility of mothers to ensure their daughters know how to cook from a tender age.
In the past, before one could settle down in marriage, she would have to go through a test to find out if she could make a good cook.
She was supposed to prepare ugali for the entire family of the husband to be.
If by bad luck it was not well prepared, the bride would then be forced to go back to her parents to be taught how to cook before she gets married.
This has since then been the trend as mothers still strive to ensure that their daughters bring no shame when they get married.
Luhya ladies are taught how to cook good food at a tender age and grow up making good cooks.
Therefore men, if you want someone who can prepare you a good meal every day, go for a Luhya lady.
As they say, the way to a man's heart is through the stomach.
