A team of 13 neurosurgeons from the US have landed in Kisumu where they will treat locals with special health problems for ten days.
The group began its services at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) where they will be handling among others, spinal fractures.
Their arrival was confirmed by the institution's CEO Peter Okoth who said that 80 patients in need of neurosurgical treatment have been lined up as beneficiaries.
He added that the doctors have brought with them their equipment and implants.
Okoth added that patients will be treated at a subsidized cost, as the hospital seeks to place itself as the best in dealing with neurological issues in the region.
"It is a very expensive exercise, but it’s subsidised to help those who cannot afford the cost of the procedures,” said Okoth," he stated.
Kenya has only 20 neurosurgeons at the moment, with the team leader Victor Awuor now hoping that the arrival of the doctors will challenge Kenyans to embrace the field.
“We want to increase access, and hopefully the next generation of neurosurgeons will emanate from this initiative,” he said.
He added that the medics are drawn from the US States of New York, Boston and Ohio and is expected back in September for the same exercise.
The county has given the doctors pharmaceuticals and non-pharmaceuticals equipment for the exercise.
