Residents of Bokoma village in Bonchari, Kisii County watched a free wrestling match on Tuesday after 2 brothers engaged in a fist fight over the inheritance of a woman whose husband died 3 months ago.
Witnesses said Moffat Mogesa and Richard Oeri exchanged blows after a disagreement over the inheritance of Pauline Moraa, a mother of 3.
“Oeri who is older than Mogesa said he is the right person to inherit Moraa after her husband died 3 months ago. Mogesa on the other hand also said Moraa’s husband was his close friend and therefore, he should inherit the wife. This prompted them to a fight at the woman’s house,” said Geoffrey Ombaso.
Ombaso said it took the intervention of Nyumba Kumi officials to stop the two from fighting before they were kicked out of the homestead.
Area assistant chief Raphael Mogeni said it was shameful because the two brothers are both married with children.
“It is sad for the two to fight over the woman. Elders should have to identify a different man to inherit the woman and support her with children,” he said.
He warned married men against waiting for their friends to die and start fighting to inherit their wives.
