Five soldiers from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) were on Wednesday morning killed after their vehicles ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along Kiunga-Sankuri road in Lamu County.
KDF Public Affairs Office Col Paul Njuguna said 10 others were injured as they were on a humanitarian civil assignment before the attack by Al-Shabaab militants.
"The troops were on their way to fetch and distribute water to residents. Both the water bowser and lorry were damaged. The soldiers hit the explosive along the Kiunga and Sankuri road injuring 10 others," said Njuguna in a press release on Wednesday morning.
The injured were taken for treatment following the 8am attack.
"We thank the locals who offered assistance to the soldiers and call upon them to assist in weeding out lurking terror elements," he added.
KDF soldiers have been fighting the Somalia-based Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group to bring peace in the neighbouring country.
The terrorists have however been staging attacks in Coast region especially in Lamu due to the closeness of Boni Forest which acts as their hiding.
