Sonko took to Twitter to condole with the family following Mairu’s death on Saturday night at the Nairobi Hospital where he was undergoing treatment.

Sonko said he was deeply shocked to learn about Kalonzo's father's death.

He urged Kenyans to stand with the Ukambani political kingpin during this hard time.

“To my friend and brother H.E Kalonzo Musyoka, I’m deeply saddened by the news of your father’s demise, Mzee Peter Musyoka Mairu. On behalf of Nairobi residents and my family, I’d like to send my condolences to your family and friends during this time of grief,” Sonko twitted.

Some leaders have eulogized Kalonzo’s father as a man who fought for democracy.

They include President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula and his Amani counterpart Musalia Mudavadi.

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has also mourned Kalonzo's father.

“My sincere condolences to @skmusyoka for the passing of your father. Pole sana to you and your family for the loss of Mzee. Death is so final and irreversible and hence so painful. God give you strength at this time of sadness and mourning. May Mzee Rest In Peace,” Kalonzo twitted on Sunday.
