The National Integrated Identity Management Systems (NIIMS) dubbed Huduma Namba registration, meant to manage population register, kicked off on Monday 18th February across 15 selected counties.
Following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive, every Kenyan Citizen is now required to have a Huduma Namba, failure to which one will be denied crucial government services.
According to a statement from the Immigration office, every Kenyan above the age of six is required to physically present themselves during the registration exercise as third-party registration will not be allowed.
During the registration process, one is required to present an identification document which can be a birth certificate, ID card, Driving licence or their KRA Pin.
Kenyans on Twitter have raised concerns, suspicion and are angry over the requirement.
Here are some of their reactions on Twitter with Economist David Ndii asking citizens to resist the initiative under #resisthudumanamba
"What value will it add to our poor Kenyans besides spending the little we have in carrying out the exercise which will not bear any fruits in our economic wellbeing," wondered Samuel N Orutwa in a reply to Ndii.
More users wondered why resources could be channelled to the exercise yet there were challenges bedevilling Kenyans as the cost of living and poor services from the health sector.
"Am ready to be deported to Canada 😂😂😂...but I swear before God I #ResistHudumaNamba 💯.....issa SCAM!!!... Kenyans wake up !!!!" wrote Harlim Sagwa, popular on Twitter as Duke of Kakamega.
There were those who wondered what would happen should they consider having the Huduma Namba given it'd have an expiry date.
"So after the expiry period, you expire being a Kenyan?" posed Edwin Motuka.
More questions emerged with tweeps asking; "why do you need a "huduma number" when you have your ID number? Passport number? KRA pin number? Service number for military personnel? Driving license number? Have we not been using these numbers to access government services? And don't they already capture personal data?"
The registration for Huduma number is currently ongoing in Huduma centres across the country.
